Ride to the top of Hawaii
Here's a shot from inside the truck on the way to the top of Mauna Kea. While we drove from Hilo to the visitor center at the 9,300ft level, Tom, our guide for the night, took us from there to the top, at just under 14,000 ft.

At sunset, the air temperature was 28F, before the wind chill factor. This explains the non-Hawaiian-looking clothing. The clear, dry, air and the setting sun made for long, sharp shadows. This picture looks like it could have been taken by Sojourner on the surface of Mars.

This is the exterior of the Gemini Telescope building. If you see a picture of the Mauna Kea telescopes, this one is easy to spot by the band around the "equator" of the silver dome. This band opens up, allowing wind to blow through, rather than around, the building. This reduces the turbulence the wind causes, which can effect the images they are recording.

Inside the building, here's the Gemini telescope itself, or at least the "mechanical" part of it. My Dad commented that it looks like a flight simulator, I guess it does. The platform was large enough for all of us to climb up and take a look.
